Cathryn Hall was widowed at the age of 24 in 1987.

In 2001 Cathryn was faced with a very difficult decision – to keep her police widows’ pension, or move in with her partner which meant that she would no longer be eligible to receive the widows’ pension.

2006 saw Police Pension Regulations change for new entrants and serving officers eligible to transfer to the new scheme. Should the most awful thing happen, they know that their survivors' benefits are now payable for life, irrespective of whether they remarry or form a new partnership.

But many police widows in England and Wales are forever overshadowed by 1987 Police Pension Regulations – meaning they will not be able to keep their pensions for life should they remarry or cohabit, and not have their pensions reinstated.

We have got to change, says chairman welcoming independent review report.

The Police Federation is in need of fundamental reform to enable it to improve significantly, according to the findings of an independent review. The 84-page report, published on Monday 20 January, makes 36 recommendations for reform set around three key themes: trust, professionalism and unity. The recommendations will be discussed at the Police Federation conference in Bournemouth in May.
