Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) have joined the Police Federation of England and Wales in calling for a posthumous medal for officers killed in the line of duty.
The campaign has been led by Bryn Hughes and Paul Bone, whose daughters PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone were murdered on duty after attending a call out in Manchester 10 years ago.
Now 26 PCCs have added their names to a letter to Home Secretary Suella Braverman endorsing the idea of an Elizabeth Medal similar to the Elizabeth Cross which is awarded to fallen members of the Armed Services.
Staffordshire Police Federation chair Lee Robinson said he was pleased that PCCs had added their support to the campaign, which is already backed by the Police Superintendents’ Association.
“It would be fitting for police officers who pay the ultimate price when serving their communities to be recognised with the Elizabeth Medal in the same way that our Armed Forces are recognised when they die in the line of duty,” he explains.
“I am sure such a medal would be welcomed by the families of fallen officers and it would be particularly fitting if it was named after our late Queen who dedicated her own life to serving the public.”
