Staffordshire Police Federation will be joining organisations from across the country today to mark the National Day of Reflection.

It is a year to the date that Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the first national lockdown as part of efforts to try to stop the spread of Covid-19. Since then the pandemic has claimed more than 126,000 lives.

Led by national charity Marie Curie, today will include a national minute’s silence at midday. Communities are also being encouraged to take part in a ‘beacon of light’ at 8pm by standing on their doorsteps or at their windows while shining a light from a candle, torch or mobile phone.

Phil Jones, Staffordshire Police Federation branch chair, says it is important for the nation to come together to remember all those who have lost their lives.

“I don’t think any of us envisaged this time last year that so many people would tragically lose their lives due to the pandemic. But it is important that we remember all those people who have died and show our support to the families and friends they left behind,” he said.

Phil is encouraging those who have dealt with bereavement to reach out for support if they need it.

“The Federation can give officers access to a wide range of support services, so just get in touch if you feel you need help or support,” he added.
